Gautam Gambhir Likely to Succeed Rahul Dravid as India Coach

Ex-Indian opener Gambhir is therefore expected to assume the head coach position of the Indian cricket team from Rahul Dravid. Gambhir is said to be a front-runner for the Nagpur job after months and reports that he has been lined up to attend an interview with Board of Control for Cricket in India Secretary Jay Shah and other officials on June 18 in Mumbai.

Gautam Gambhir’s Meeting with BCCI Officials

Gambhir’s choice seems to have been influenced by his belief, shared with IANS, that he will have a packed schedule on Tuesday where he will be meeting Jay Shah and other BCCI officials at between 2pm and 4pm. 

A source on the BCCI said, “Gauti, (Gautam Gambhir) will be flying today around 12 pm to mumbai for the interview at BCCI office in Mumbai.”

It can be taken for granted that he is on his way to becoming the next head coach following the approval of the BCCI on the terms presented by him on the head coach position.

“As for the MSM, to which the new head coach of the men’s cricket team will be appointed in the near future.”

Demands and Conditions Set by Gautam Gambhir

Some of the condition that Gautam Gambhir have laid down before accept to work as head coach for the BCCI includes. These include:

• Full Command of the Team: Gambhir wants to be the the final word on all that relates to the team.
• Separate Teams for Different Formats: In particular, he has stressedthe  the creation of separate outfits for one-day (ODIs and T20Is) and three-day (Tests) formats of the game.

It becomes quite clear that such demands have been agreed to by the BCCI with a a likelihood of Gambhir’s appointment in the near future.

BCCI’s Search for a New Coach

The BCCI had earlier advertised the post of the head coach for the team and the deadline for the applications was 27 May. 

The new coach’s deal will begin in July 2024 and include a deal in the tests, (One Day Internationals) ODIs and (T20 Internationals) T20Is till December 2027.

Rahul Dravid’s Tenure and Gautam Gambhir’s Aspirations

Rahul Dravid, who is the current head coach of the Indian team, was appointed after the T20 world cup in year 2021. The contract of the player was renewed until the forthcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in this year. 

Earlier in June, Gambhir unveiled that he wants to be the head coach of the Indian cricket team elaborating, “It is always an honour for any country to coach his or her national team cricketers. 

You are not only representing the 140 crores of Indians living in the country but also the Indian community across the world.”

Currently, Gautam Gambhir mentors the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He played a crucial role in India’s triumphs in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup.
