T20 World Cup 2024: Big Blow to Bangladesh Ahead of Super 8 Clash vs Australia
ICC Sanctions Bangladesh Pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib After Altercation
In an ugly incident, Bangladesh’s promising fast bowler, Tanzim Hasan Sakib has been fined 15 percent of his match fee as he engaged in an unpleasant verbal exchange with Nepal captain Rohit Paudel during a T20 World Cup 2024 group stage fixture.
The said incident happened during a do-or-die battle and raised questions about Sakib’s attitude regarding the Super 8 match to be played against Australia.
Tanzim Hasan Sakib’s Altercation with Nepal Captain
The event that involved an argumentative exchange of words between Sakib and seemingly pushing Paudel was shortly addressed by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Former on-field umpire Ahsan Raza and Sam Nogajski, third umpire Jayaraman Mandangopal, and fourth umpire Kumar Dharmasena pressed charges under Article 2. 12 of the ICC Code of Conduct that relates to touching others inappropriately.
ICC’s Decision and Sanctions
Sakib admitted to the offence resulting in a fine and being given one demerit point on record. This sanction was done under the ICC’s Elite Panel of Match Referees headed by Richie Richardson.
This is the first offence of Sakib within a period of 24 months; if one gets a total of three or more demerit points within this period, he may be banned for one Test or two limited-overs matches.
Tanzim Hasan Sakib’s Stellar Performance
However, what cannot be debated is that Sakib’s performance in the field against Nepal was nothing sort of a masterpiece.
He took four wickets for seven runs and bowled 21 dot balls in a row, which was the record in the T20 World Cup until the Lockie Ferguson.
Sakib’s spell played a major role to beat Bermuda by 21 runs and qualify for the Super 8s.
Bangladesh’s Super 8 Journey
Thus, Bangladesh went through to the Super 8 stage and will play against Australia at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua on 20th June.
To compound the problem, the recent disciplinary measures will challenge the team morale especially with limited focus from Sakib.
Nepal Captain Rohit Paudel’s Response
Post the match, Nepal’s captain Rohit Paudel denied any issues regarding the incident with Sakib. Speaking about performance of Sakib in the match, Paudel mentioned that the bowling was done under pressure and appreciated that the pacer used the new ball brilliantly.
“Tanzim bowled very well, especially with the new ball, hit the right areas, and asked questions that we could not answer. It was evenly balanced, but he came and told me hit it and I told him go and bowl it.”
